Introduction / History

The Alege — also known as the Alegi or Uge — are an indigenous people of Obudu Local Government Area in Cross River State, in the southeastern corner of Nigeria. Their language, called Elege (ISO: alf), belongs to the Bendi branch of the Benue-Congo language family and is related to the Gayi language of the neighboring Obanliku cluster that extends into Cameroon. Obudu is one of Nigeria's most elevated regions, where the plateau rises above 1,500 meters and a cooler climate sets it apart from the surrounding lowlands — a landscape of hills, grasslands, and forest that has shaped Alege life for generations.

The Alege share the Obudu plateau with several neighboring peoples — including the Bette, Utugwang, Ukpe, and Ubang — each with distinct languages woven into the area's diverse fabric. Cross River State is one of Nigeria's most linguistically complex regions, home to more than thirty ethnic groups. British colonial administration incorporated Obudu into the Eastern Region of Nigeria, and the Alege became citizens of an independent Nigeria in 1960. Cross River State was established as a distinct state in 1967. Through these political changes, the Alege have maintained their communal identity, rooted in language, land, and shared highland heritage.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Life on the Obudu plateau is tied to the highland landscape. The Alege are primarily subsistence farmers who cultivate yams, cassava, maize, and vegetables suited to the cooler plateau climate. The Obudu area is also associated with cattle ranching and tea cultivation, and some families participate in the region's broader agricultural economy. The plateau's scenic terrain has attracted tourism through the Obudu Mountain Resort, though its economic benefits reach communities unevenly.

Family life centers on extended kinship. Elders hold authority in decisions about land, marriage, and community disputes, and family networks provide support across the seasons of life. Communal celebrations — tied to harvests, marriages, births, and community memory — bring families and villages together through feasting, music, and ceremony. English serves schooling and government, while Elege remains the language of home among the Alege.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Christianity is the primary religion of the Alege. Mission work in Cross River State — through Catholic, Presbyterian, and other Protestant churches — established a Christian presence that has shaped the region for generations. The majority of the Alege community identifies as Christian, and church life is a familiar part of community rhythm.

A genuine evangelical presence has taken root — believers who have placed personal faith in Jesus Christ and seek to live under the authority of Scripture and the Holy Spirit. This is a real and encouraging foundation. Traditional beliefs connected to ancestors and the land continue alongside Christian identity for some in the community, a pastoral reality the local church is best positioned to address. Scripture is available in languages the Alege understand, and the church has a foundation to build on. The call before Alege believers is to mature in faith and carry the good news to less-reached peoples around them.

What Are Their Needs?

The Alege church's most pressing spiritual need is deep discipleship grounded in the word of God. Trained local leaders — pastors and teachers who can feed their congregations with Scripture, address real pastoral needs, and multiply disciples — would strengthen what the Spirit is building. Christian resources in a language the Alege know well would deepen heart-language engagement with the gospel.

Access to quality secondary and higher education is uneven in the Obudu area, and many young people face barriers to opportunity. Healthcare access in rural plateau communities remains a challenge. Like many smaller ethnic communities in southeastern Nigeria, the Alege navigate life with limited political voice and modest outside investment in their region. Ministry that walks alongside the Alege in both spiritual and practical need will reflect the wholeness of the gospel.

Prayer Items

Pray that Alege believers would grow into genuine, Bible-rooted disciples whose faith is visible in daily life and whose witness is bold within their own community.
Pray for faithful Alege church leaders to be raised up and trained — men and women who will plant healthy, scripture-centered churches across the Obudu plateau.
Pray that the evangelical community among the Alege would embrace a mission vision and carry the gospel to less-reached peoples across Cross River State and beyond.
Pray for improved education and healthcare access in Alege communities, and for Christian workers who serve practical needs as a living witness to Christ's care for the whole person.
